The other Selected, which include Piper McLean, Hazel Levesque, and Reyna Ramírez-Arellano, admit to Annabeth that they too have been followed by shadows. Strange dreams plague the Selected, and their shadows seem to be hiding within the people surrounding them. Just as Annabeth slowly starts to fall in love, several murders occur, and several of the Selected fall as victim. Annabeth soon reveals the biggest truth of all: the Selection isn't meant to find love; it's meant to find those who are different. And once they're found, the world may never be the same. The Selected were promised love, and they found it, though not in the expected way. But as darkness falls upon the palace and friends turn on each other, can love save them?

When Annabeth Chase was nine years old, her father and stepmother moved her and her two stepbrothers from San Francisco to Manhattan. The summer after her junior year in high school, her father decides to take Helen (the step-monster) and Helen's twin brats on vacation. Not wanting to go, Annabeth decides to visit her grandparents house in Alabama for the summer. Reluctant to leave the big apple for her Gram and Gramp's small town farm, Annabeth doesn't realize what's waiting for her.
