He didn't have a lot of friends, so she told Zak that if he attempted to befriend her son, she'd pay him. So, long story short, Zak ends up falling for the person that he's being paid to be friends with.

What happens when Zak and Dave are on a walk in the park and Zak is offered a drink that causes you to fall in love with the first person you lay eyes on, and Zak first sees Dave? Dave, who recognized the drink, immediately figured out what had happened. Zak could deny it all he wanted, but it would never work.
