Her fear of being drafted slowly creeps up on her as time grows on and she imagines her death over and over again in her dreams. When the leader of Normont brings her nightmares into reality she slowly becomes fearless. Avis becomes drafted in her family and Jolen goes with her, starting their journey to the War. When they get sent into war they have a group of five people and Avis's group is called The Intrepid Five.
