When Fawkes used his tears to save Harry's life after he was bitten by the basilisk he did a lot more than that. The venom from the basilisk and the phoenix tears not only destroyed the Horcrux inside his scar. When Harry returns he ends up seeing through all of the dark lord's memories up until he had killed Harry's parents. For years Harry has hidden who he truly was and pretended to be someone he was not. The Harry who returned is not the same Harry who went down to the chamber.
