He'd been harsh with people since the day his parents died. Not for any real reason, just because it was easier. Easier to keep people at arm's length. Now he thought it would be easier to scoff at Jake's endless energy, easier to pretend that someone like Jake, who was warmth and light and every dumb thing Heeseung pretended not to need, wouldn't make a difference in his life. But standing here now, watching Jake smile like the world was still good, Heeseung felt something ugly twist in his chest.
