Newt was sent into the maze with his younger sister, Audrey, when he was 16 and she was 15. He wants to protect her, but she knows she can handle herself. Since Audrey is the only girl she has learned to cope with living with the boys. After 2 years in the glade some of the boys began to consider her the little sister of the glade and are now protective over her. The other boys became her enemies. Newt needs to protect her now more than ever. When Thomas comes up in The Box it begins to get harder to keep her safe when the way out of the maze is so dangerous.

"You know when you're running through the maze and you're almost finished, you can see the glade and you have all this built up adrenaline? You're sore, tired, sweaty but you still feel the last bit of energy to get you home? That's what I feel whenever I'm around her. It's like every nerve in my body wants to wrap around her but I also teetering on the verge danger that would come with that."
