And Steve didn't really know why he didn't tell his best friends that /their/ best friend wasn't ripped open on the floor of the Upside Down, and instead was underneath Steve's fingertips. His fingers that nursed him back to life and hid him from Hawkins and from a life-long prison sentence. But, inevitably, their friends did find out (he can't really keep a secret like that for long).
