Nico attempts a long-distance shadow-travel to visit Hazel, but his powers falter due to lingering exhaustion and the sheer emotional toll of the wars. Instead of Camp Jupiter, he lands in a dark, unfamiliar alleyway in a city unlike any he's known: Gotham. The sheer density of human despair and darkness in Gotham is overwhelming, almost physically painful for him. He encounters petty criminals or a low-level gang, instinctively using his powers to defend himself, but he's disoriented and vulnerable.

Nico learns he was chosen to go on a quest to a school named Pig fa- Hogwarts to protect the golden trio, including the boy-who-just-won't-die. Harry Potter from a guy called mouldyshor- Voldemort.
