Starting from season 4 episode 13 we see an AU where the story changes completely with an act of kindness from Caroline to Klaus. Caroline had set out to reconcile with Elena and instead is met by Klaus, who mourns the death of his youngest brother while trapped in Elena's living room by the Bennet witch Bonnie. After Damon and Bonnie's death, Caroline went after the emotionless Stefan to help him get his humanity back. She finds him in the very specific City that the one and only original hybrid lived in. Which she had a thing for him, and already admitted that to him in his last visit back in mystic falls in the woods.
