Tris wakes up in a destroyed, abandoned city with only one memory. And that memory is of a man named Tobias. Desperate for answers, she sets out to find him, though she finds that the crumbling world around her may prove that task to be difficult. Alliances are formed. Choices are made. War breaks out, and Chicago is heavily involved. Tobias must balance leading a city, commanding an army, and getting his wife back. Tris faces many obstacles and hazards along the way as well, but she pushes through, determined to find her way back to him.

Tobias remains in Dauntless, but while he isn't exactly despondent, he does feel out of place. He doesn't fit in and cannot go on with normal life after everything that happened. Then, Choosing Day arrives. And history definitely does not repeat itself when Tris goes through the initiation process with her old friends and enemies, her ex-boyfriend, and the new sixteen-year-olds, while citizens of Chicago are mysteriously dying. Tris is trying to get comfortable in this new relationship. Its all new to her and Tobias. Tobias loves the ground Tris walks on; would do anything to protect her and make her happy. He has his baggage, and he carries it with him on his back. They think they don't deserve each other but oh how they need each other. (Al is alive, parents can see their child if they make it through initiation, and there was no war!!)

Except for Tris; her father died and Christmas's were never the same since he was the spirit. As soon as she graduated from college she got out of the old town and became a best selling author. Now, at 25, she's come back to the town for Christmas at her mom and new husbands request. Tobias Eaton has lived in the town since the day be was born. He grew up loving the holiday.
