Sarcasm, a term which here means the use of irony to mock or convey a message, is a defining feature of The Umbrella Academy, shaping the dynamics and personalities of each of the Hargreeves. With their dysfunctional upbringing and superpowers, the superheros use sarcasm as a coping mechanism and a way to express their frustration, affection, and most importantly, rivalry.
