Alethea was princess of Exzonia, and Milo was King Cassian of Lacuna's Captain of the Royal Guard. And they lived in a world where each had two birthmarks, one corresponding to their soulmate, the other to their worst enemy. Milo and Alethea shared identical birthmarks, making them both sworn enemies AND unfortunate soulmates. So when Milo had been ordered by his king to kill Alethea, it proved impossible, as soulmates couldn't hurt each other no matter how hard they tried. Now Milo needed a new plan, but before he could come up with one, a foreign enemy attacked. Can Milo put aside his mission to get rid of Lathy just a little while longer? Can they work together to defeat a common enemy while still keeping their distance? Or will Milo let down his guard and let his heart get in the way?

The Guardians have always been made up of odd pairs, but the Mountain/Seaside team is perhaps the oddest of them all. Angie, a Mountain girl, is large (both personalty wise and actually wise) and prefers to be right in the middle of all the action. After all, she has indestructible skin, might as well use it. Henry, a Seaside born and raised, is on the smaller side (still both in personalty and size) and would rather shoot poison arrows from his bow in the shadows than fight man to man. Needless to say that they don't get along. But when all other Guardians are either killed or go missing, they have to stop fighting and find them before the kingdoms find out. They realize that they may have more in common than they thought. And when they're separated and fear the other dead, they learn just what their partnership means to them.
