The mysterious organism was the subject of an Empire State University study. Was it an alien from outer space or did it have some other origin? After escaping from containment, it bonded with its host, Peter Parker. This amazing shapeshifting life form became the hero's new black costume. But, after wearing it for three years, he realized that it was some kind of harmful parasite. Although he freed himself from its influence, the venomous creature is still alive and seeks revenge!

During the Civil War as the children of Spider-Man successfully wiped everyone's memories of their father unmasking himself on television, Mephisto angered by this went after them but Peter Parker came and save his kids as an ancient power from his family awakened inside him. Seeing things more different now focuses on himself and his family letting the rest of the heroes deal with the War as he trains his children to becoming the Spiders of the future and preparing them.
