Looking back on it, Jimmy blames the garden for everything that's happened. After all, that's where he found the box, which led to Deepfrost, which led to this whole spiral of backsliding further and further away from the warmth of life. It had all started simply enough- with a dungeon, and with a goal- and had, over time, meandered into a world of beasts and bosses and dangers that Jimmy never had fully been able to grasp until it was too late, until he learned what Deepfrost REALLY was. But, that's a little too close to the end of the story. Let's rewind things back to the start, back to the beginning of the game known as Deepfrost. Let's talk about the first runs, the first deadly encounters, the first small victories. Or . . . perhaps you should be left to discover that on your own. After all, Deepfrost is a game that prides itself in its own immersive experience . . . in more ways than one. --- Deepfrost is an AU that is a crossover of the games Inscryption (by Daniel Mullins) and Decked Out 2 (by Tango Tek). You don't need to know anything about either of these to enjoy this story. If you don't want spoilers for the level design of Decked Out 2 or the layout of Act 2 and some of the overarching lore of Inscryption, I would consider not reading this fic, or at least leaving it for later :]

Somewhere, in an empty void of space, in a gap between planets, in the orbit of a star, there lies a spark. Inside the spark is a single piece of text turning into a line turning into a block of code, all being composed by an unseen hand in a different solar system. The last symbol is typed with finality; gas swirls in tighter and tighter circles; the basis of a world pops into existence. Third Life, it's called, and for a week or a month or so, it's empty, devoid of Players. And then, suddenly, someone appears in the world, and thirteen others soon follow. They stand in a ring in a forest, all surveying their surroundings and their fellow Players. Martyn is one of them- one of the original fourteen. Of course, he doesn't know then that there will be more people joining the group in other worlds named Life in the future- he doesn't even know that there will be other Lifes! All he knows is that he's in a world that's unfamiliar to him, he's surrounded by friends and strangers alike, and he needs to do anything in his power to live. --- Welcome! I present to you: The Life Series told through the eyes of the first four winners and in the scope of The Oh Hellos' Four Winds albums, featuring Scott as the representative of Notos, Grian as the representative of Eurus, Pearl as the representative of Boreas, and Martyn as the representative of Zephyrus. Grian comes up with a plan. Jimmy and Joel are assigned to be distractions, but aren't told what the plan is. Surely, nothing could go wrong here, right? In which Joel and the hero Frost have a nice little fight, everything comes crumbling down, a terrible misunderstanding is had, and, as things around them fall apart, Joel and Frost fall together.

When Martyn was fifteen, he saw his first crow. The two stared at each other for a second- the bird's beady black eyes versus Martyn's green ones- and then the crow tipped its head, spread its wings, and flew off. Not long after, Martyn's mother came down with a sudden illness and passed away. Ever since then, Martyn's been traveling the land. If a crow shows up in the place he's in, he leaves as quickly as possible. They mean misfortune, he's puzzled out, so he shouldn't stick around when they're near. He doesn't want to get caught in the crossfire, after all. He hasn't ever been all that good at doing what he should, though. --- 3rd Life AU set in medieval times.
