Young Roman aristocrat Catalina Bandinelli travels to Jerusalem to become the wife of Baldwin IV, heir to the Holy Land. Their union is meant to be a political alliance between Rome and Jerusalem, but it gradually turns into a story of profound love, faith, and sorrow. When Baldwin learns of the deadly illness that will shape his fate, Catalina remains by his side, helping him bear the burden of kingship, war, and a life slowly fading away.
**Author's Note:**
This story is a work of fiction inspired by real historical events surrounding Baldwin IV, the Kingdom of Jerusalem, and the era of the Crusades. Catalina and her storyline are entirely original creations woven into the existing history of that time. The book also partially reinterprets and draws inspiration from certain scenes and imagery from *Kingdom of Heaven*.
I have always felt that Baldwin IV's story was tragically unfair. Unlike many great rulers, he never had someone by his side who could share his burden until the very end. This book is my attempt to imagine an alternative history in which the King of Jerusalem did have such a person - a woman who became not only his wife, but also his greatest source of strength and support.
