[Wattys 2022 Winner!] Vanessa Brooks, an anxious and cynical seventeen year-old, discovers she can travel to the summer of 1953 through the run-down community pool in her rural Michigan town and risks her future as she falls for a boy who lives in the past. ****** On the last day of junior year, Vanessa Brooks joins her friends for a traditional jump into the city pool to celebrate the beginning of summer and the last year they plan to spend in Palmer, Michigan; a dead-end riverside town with an eerily abandoned historic main street and decaying Victorian mansions. But when she resurfaces her classmates have been replaced by girls in retro swimsuits and bathing caps and guys in thigh-baring briefs with cigarettes tucked behind their ears. When Pete Harrison, an unfamiliar face who seems somewhat familiar with hers, offers a dizzy and confused Vanessa a towel and a ride home, she discovers her house and family missing. She has somehow slipped into 1953, the year her grandparents graduated high school. Using the pool and vivid imaginings of her grandfather's memories, Vanessa continues to escape to 1953- and to Pete, who, despite his unaffected kindness and optimism, has a mysterious bad reputation around town. But as she dives deeper into the summer her grandparents fell in love, she finds herself unable to return to the present without venturing even further into the past to correct a mistake that threatens her family and future. *Content Warning: this story contains scenes of near drowning and other perils on the sea, swearing, smoking and alcohol use* This story is complete at ~90,000 words. [COMPLETE] Katherine Williamson Peters wasn't born a beaten coward. When she was a girl she was wild and free and brave. She was Blue Angel, fierce protector of the imaginary innocent and robber of make-believe trains. She climbed trees and disobeyed her father and she cavorted with demons. At least that's what the church folk said-- Gabriel Townsend's momma was a concubine for Satan himself, and her son was the devil's seed. Not that it mattered much to Katherine, back when she was young and reckless. Gabe was just her partner in crime, her best friend in the whole world. She was Blue Angel and he was Devil Dog, slayer of bad guys and wielder of six-shooter finger guns. But life had other plans for Katherine than the rebellion and joy she favored as a girl. She couldn't say exactly how it happened that she lost her courage, but she woke up one day and found herself conquered. Battered and alone, crushed beneath the heel of her husband, her obligations, and the weight of the town's judgment. A brave woman would have fought. She'd have protected herself and brought goodness and strength back to the name of God-- a name her husband's preachings had tarnished. Katherine wasn't brave. She was a coward, and like a coward she turned her back on God and she fled... ...right into the arms of the devil.

AMBYS FAVORITE 2024 What happens when Joan of Arc and the Archangel Gabriël break the most important law of the Heavens and declare their love for each other? The divine plan set in motion hundreds of years ago has at long last reached the endgame. *** There is one absolute law all angels must abide by - never fall in love. After she is burned to death, Joan of Arc becomes an angel of the Vale to fight for God. But even after 600 years, Joan continues to rebel against the Lord Protector, Michael, unwilling to forgive or forget that her mortal life ended in flames. The only one she still listens to is the Archangel Gabriël, who does all he can to protect Joan from Michael's judgment. When an old enemy gravely wounds Gabriël, he and Joan are confronted with their feelings for each other - and the risks of banishment if they dare to cross this line. Yet, with a demon slowly taking hold of Gabriël's mind for the sake of personal vengeance and Michael's growing suspicion of their closeness and his own deep, unanswered affection for Gabriël, how long can their secret possibly last? As Joan and Gabriël are threatened by both friend and foe, they learn that everything they believed and fought for, everything that they thought they were, was a lie. *** [[This story is complete; total word count - around 240K]] IMPORTANT; please read the author's note for all trigger warnings. Their respect, their businesses, their home ... But at a cost. The cost being me. I was to be wed to a stranger. A Yade. His nationality, species, colour, eyes, skin... none of that ever mattered. Six glorious years spread apart with memories that set my soul on fire and light my life up. Hope was a beacon and love was a companion I had lived with in every life. And now, I was to marry a stranger to save my parents' life. There was no real choice to make. Why show me how glorious my life could be, if I were never meant to live it?
