Max Niekro, the undead juggernaut that brought the Risen into space to war against Earth's enemies, is gone. Left behind are the tattered remnants of the once-mighty force that defeated the Velkin and brought the Vanguard of the Blood to its knees, staring across the Abyss at two old foes that have raised their heads to focus their malevolence on Earth once more. Can Max's neo-shell clone, Two take up the reins that his progenitor carried and lead the Risen once more to victory? Or will two universes burn as a mad god and a K'ethik swarm try to consume the universe whole?

Odashen. Kamdemahn. Giant's Bane. Oldest One. On the worlds of the Avatar Alliance I am called many names and I am considered many things. Some see me as a holy warrior with a purpose so powerful, not even Death can stop me. Others think me a tormented wanderer, driven mad by a horrible fate and left to travel the wastes for eternity. Yet others see me as a soulless creature of otherworldly vengeance, returning from the grave to wreak havoc on my enemies. From my point of view, I am ALL of these things. Yet, I am none of them. My name is Max Niekro and I am Risen. I have been summoned back from the grave for one purpose and one purpose alone. I'm here to kill Velkin. Join the Risen juggernaut in this sequel to Risen: Darklight and the third book in the Risen saga as he continues his quest to defend Earth and the living of the galaxy by taking his war to the stars, where he will face even greater challenges to his effort to rid the universe of the rapacious Velkin, a giant alien race bent on consuming every living sentient being they find before sucking out their home world's life force.

"What the hell?" I took a step closer to the mirror, staring at my reflection in disbelief. The person looking back was still me, but at the same time it wasn't. I had the same thick, dark, curly hair. The same hazel eyes. The same olive skin with a light dusting of freckles (ugh) scattered across the bridge of my nose. But my curls were now streaked with highlights. And not the subtle, golden-brown ones that sometimes appeared during the summer. No, these were an aggressive, dazzling blond that went from the roots of my hair all the way to the tips. It looked like I had spent a full day getting my hair done in some upscale salon. Never mind that I had never set foot in such a place since the day I was born. My eyes appeared somehow wider and more luminous. The colour brighter, my eyelashes darker up against them. And, when I looked closely, my pupils seemed to be slitted almost like a cat. I looked down at my body. My skinny arms-which had always refused to gain any definition no matter how hard I exercised-were lined with flat, wiry muscles. My bony shoulders were now curved and smooth. My scrawny legs were toned like a dancer. I reached down and lifted my shirt, revealing two subtle lines running vertically down my perfectly flat stomach, hinting at the rock-hard abs underneath. My whole body was rippling with strength. Like liquid steel.

Written as a companion novel to Risen and Risen: Darklight, Echoes of War tells us what the echoes, psychic reverberations of violent deaths that appear as ghosts and led by the incomparable Hannibal Barca of ancient Carthage, are doing between the major engagements of the two books. Which is a combination of learning both how to fight in a modern war while NOT killing each other as old conflicts arise with the return of memory. See how Hannibal begins to craft his determined volunteer ghosts into the formidable fighting force that plays a key role in not only the various raids the Risen engage in, but the assault on the siphon and the alpha tournament as well. He may only be an echo of his former self, but the former general is still one hell of a commander of soldiers! Join him and the echoes as they prepare to go to war against the Velkin.
