She didn't flinch when he sat across from her.
Sylus had seen her before. Quiet in his lectures, precise in her answers, invisible to everyone else. But tonight, in the noise and glitter of celebration, she was there, alone. A bottle of beer sat untouched between them, her fingers resting lightly on the glass.
"Why are you here?" he asked, voice low, unreadable.
Her eyes shifted its attention to his. "Just for a friend."
He knew that wasn't true.
She had no one. No study partners. No names whispered in the halls. Just silence.
And yet, she didn't shrink from him. Didn't pretend to smile. She simply existed-like a shadow that had learned to survive the light.
Something about her defied the rules he lived by. Something about her made him stay.
