We made the pact when we were twelve.
"If we're both single at thirty," Avery said, voice sticky with soda and summer heat, "we'll marry each other. Just so we're not...alone."
It was a joke. Or it was supposed to be.
We laughed, shook on it, and went back to daring each other to jump off the roof into the pool.
But Avery never forgot.
