Every woman before Blair could step into both roles effortlessly. Except her. People love telling stories about ballerinas becoming their Black Swan like darkness suddenly appears the moment someone finally lets go, but Blair Lockwood has spent her entire life knowing it doesn't work that way. In the Lockwood family, dancing both the White Swan and the Black Swan is practically inherited, and Blair has everything she should need to pull it off. She has the technique and the discipline and the control, yet every time she performs the Black Swan, something still feels missing, like she's reaching for a version of herself she can never fully touch. Then Lovina Ander arrives at the academy and suddenly everybody's attention shifts. Blair thought Lovina was coming for the role. She didn't realize Lovina's attention had been drifting toward her the entire time. And somewhere between rivalry and obsession and the pressure of becoming the dancer her family expects her to be, Blair starts discovering parts of herself she was never supposed to touch.

Sloane is what's left when the truth is taken too early. Luca is what survives when the truth is told too late. They were never meant to stand in the same room without something breaking. Every look is a reminder. Hate should have been enough. It should have stayed simple. Clean. But it doesn't. It fractures. It lingers. It turns into something heavier-something that makes it hard to breathe when the other gets too close. And the closer they get, the more they realize that everything they once felt is starting to burn.

Sometimes we're not even fully aware of how similar hate and love really are. How closely they sit together, how thin the line is between them. One wrong word, one wrong choice, one moment of fear or anger, and you cross it without even realizing you've done so. That's how it had alwags been with Casey Miller and Olivia Lordan. They didn't hate each other for no reason. There were reasons, plenty of them, actually. Old wounds that never healed right, memories that calcified instead of fading, words spoken too young and carried for too long. But were those reasons valid enough? That was the question no one ever asked out loud. Because validity is subjective. Pain doesn't measure itself against intent. Trauma doesn't care how old you were, or what you meant to do. It just exists, heavy and unrelenting, shaping you whether you want it to or not. Everyone has flaws. Everyone has demons they fight in private. Some people turn inward and rot quietly. Some people explode. Some people run. Some people stay and harden. None of it is clean, and none of it is fair. And maybe that was the cruelest part for them. Not the hate. Not the anger. Not even the silence. But the fact that, once upon a time, it had been love, or something dangerously close to it, and that was what made everything else hurt so much more.

"Relax," I murmured softly. My voice dropped without me even thinking about it, lower now, closer. "Is this okay?" Charlotte hesitated. I felt it in the way her shoulders shifted beneath the tension, the tiny pause before she answered. Her fingers tightened once more around the armrests. Then loosened slightly. "...Yes." The word came out quieter than before. Careful. Neither of us spoke. Then, after holding there for just a second too long, I leaned forward. Slowly-so slowly it almost felt deliberate enough to give her time to stop me, if she wanted to. The distance between us shrank inch by careful inch, my gaze flickering briefly to her lips before lifting again to her body posture, searching for any sign that I should pull back. But I didn't. And when the last trace of space between us finally disappeared, I kissed her. --- Audrey DuPont is used to the party life, smoking and drinking until the sun comes up, and throwing money without a second thought. But what happens when money can't save her? Charlotte Brown is the polar opposite of the head cheer captain. She's stoic, quiet, smart, and most of all, she isn't a trust fund kid like the rest. The only thing on her mind is graduating and making money. They both want something from each other, but as the thin line blurs between academics and attraction, they'll have to wonder: Is it really worth it?
