This is a short work I wrote in college. I had misplaced it for awhile and then recently found it again. Then I lost it again for a bit, but located it once more and decided to share it here. It details the first manned mission to Mars and the more or less colossal bungle that's made of it. This story makes reference to the old Viking probes, but not the Curiosity Rover because that hadn't been launched at the time this was written and I'm far too lazy to update this. After posting this I realized it also makes reference to Pluto as a planet, a title which has since been stripped from it. That will remain unchanged as well because I still like to think of Pluto as an underdog planet. Anyway this was an important early work for me in that I definitely felt it was the best thing I had ever written up to that point, and it probably was. It also had the distinction of getting rejected by my school's literary magazine 3 times! This includes one time where they strung me along for awhile sending me notes about how it was a finalist for consideration before it ultimately got rejected in favor of a story about a depressed college kid who thinks about sex and death a lot and eventually attempts suicide. I believe there were two other stories in the same edition with the exact same premise. I guess this just didn't fit the "tone" they were going for. But it's okay because now I present it here for the first time online. Hope you enjoy. P.S. What's the deal with my fascination with chickens? I don't know. They just crack me up for some reason.

He's like a machine. He hates to be touched. He hates anything to be non-sanitized. He can't stand human emotion. He fakes a personality, just to seem okay. He hates technology, but is nothing without it. He's a professor to the class, but supposed to be a student. He teaches the same thing everyday, but was meant to be there only to learn. And then he loses control, unable to be a machine any longer, he begins to realize worshiping technology is nothing but a curse. He holds the life of an introvert, the life of a mad man, and he admits to it. All of it. ~~ "You're useless. Nothing but a controlled soul in a shell of a body." "Then just label me a machine, there is nothing more insane than that."

"Yeah? And what would you have us practice on?" Kimba asked, rubbing his bruised cheek. Khonsu spit blood as the old man turned his gaze, his eyes striking them both. "Kings." Kimba is a boy from the Rahn Islands, more commonly known as the "Outlaw Isles", a name started after criminals were shipped there when prisons were too full. He and his sister were born there, but she was killed by the same men that sent his parents to the small strip of hell. When he finally has enough of the island, he comes up with a plan to leave forever, but first he wants revenge. Khonsu is a boy from the opposite side of the world, part of the Mesic, a small group of people from the Kyz jungles who are said to be some of the worlds deadliest fighters. On his eleventh birthday, Khonsu speaks with the Mesic moon goddess, Ania. She reveals secrets from the future, and how his presence is needed in the world outside the jungles. With help from the divines, these two boys meet in the mainland widely called the Shining Kingdom. In a turn of events, they end up on the same ship when it crashes, leaving them on an island occupied by a weird old man. But the old man is more than he seems, and teaches them ancient magics long forgotten, in hope that they can become the worlds greatest assassin duo. But that's the practice phase. Ania speaks of a strange island only recently inhabited by man, and of otherworldly and evil beings living on the far side of it. Kimba must overcome his temper, while Khonsu learns that their journeys may have something to do with his lost mother.
