Renata Mendelssohn has been confined inside her master's home as a slave for the majority of her life. Along with her older brother named Engel and a young boy named Kilian, she has lived a life filled with harsh labor and limited freedom, for they were never allowed to set foot outside the boundaries of their master's house. Renata is convinced that they will live this way forever until the day Kilian escapes the house to watch the eventful procession of the Survey Corps returning from their recent expedition. In her journey to bring back Kilian, she encounters Commander Erwin Smith who enthusiastically offers to help Renata escape her servitude. His attempt in doing this results in an outcome that changes Renata's life completely. This turn in fate ultimately convinces Renata to join the Survey Corps.
