A series of portals capture the attention of the reassembled Avengers when nightmare creatures erupt from them, snatch people and return to whatever planet, dimension or universe they come from. At first the Avengers concern themselves with dispatching the creatures. Then Bucky Barnes spots a human child looking out from one of the portals and a plan is made to rescue the child the next time a portal opens. The mission goes sideways when Bucky becomes injured and trapped in the Void, the nightmare environment behind the portals. He is rescued by Molly, a woman who has been in the Void for fourteen years, the last three with the child, an autistic boy named Nate. Until the Avengers can figure out how to handle the alien environment in the Void, Bucky vows to keep the other two safe until they can all be rescued. He discovers how precarious Molly's health is from her long captivity, resulting in a growing emotional connection with her. With their rescue the two begin a relationship that signals something new for both of them, something wonderful but fragile.
