Wrenley Strowe is the town's most reliable apothecary, a self-taught doctor who can prescribe the most valuable remedies to cure any sickness. A job like this done by the hands of a woman is more suspicious than honorable. Rumors continue to haunt her life claiming she is a witch pretending to be a devout Christian; only "pretending" to attend Church services. However, the only thing preventing her from being hanged is her brother, the respected officer of the town. Not to mention, with Wren's talents, she is the best healer in all of East Rye. No one dares to taint her title.
The townsmen purposely keep their distance from her unless one is injured or has fallen ill. So living a life of solitude is nothing new to Wrenley Strowe. That is until a handsome but mysterious newcomer comes by. He immediately sits next to Wrenley one day during Sunday church service, starting up an unexpected conversation. Seemingly able to predict the outcome of things, and to know everything about her, Wren starts to question if this mysterious stranger is even human.
Things only begin to get stranger when the town's happy-go-lucky pastor suddenly hangs himself in front of the church, and a new overly joyous pastor steps in with an obvious lust for power. Children, too, begin to go missing, and an increase in rumors about Wren being a witch starts to threaten her safety.
