Following Anne of Green Gables (1908), the book covers the second chapter in the life of Anne Shirley. This book follows Anne from the age of 16 to 18, during the two years that she teaches at Avonlea school. It includes many of the characters from Anne of Green Gables, as well as new ones like Mr. Harrison, Miss Lavendar Lewis, Paul Irving, and the twins Dora and Davy.

The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London.

With a failing business that causes debt to pile and stress to rise, the Sherwood family have to move from their sunny California home and back to their roots; Forks, Washington. Elias Sherwood wasn't excited to be back in his nightmarish birth town- but with no other choice, he's surrounded by the weird town with its even weirder people. What he isn't ready for was Jasper Hale- the closed off beautiful boy with secrets as big as Eli's own- to invade his thoughts and ruin his nights.
