Grčka mitologija sastoji se od mitova i legendi o mnogobrojnim božanstvima, herojima i čudovištima. Naći ćete priče o nastanku sveta, o "problemima" bogova, kao i priče o životima najpoznatijih heroja mitologije Perseja, Herakla, Ahila i Odiseja. Mit koji je Sofokle (496. p. n. e. - 406. p. n. e.) dramatizovao u Antigoni pripada krugu tebanskih legendi. Izdavanjem zapovesti da Polinik, Antigonin brat, ostane nesahranjen, Kreont, novi vladar Tebe, sledi atinski zakon koji ne dozvoljava sahranu neprijatelja države. Porodica preminulog ima, međutim, obavezu prema njemu: mrtvi moraju da budu sahranjeni, makar simbolično, kako to Antigona i čini, pokrivanjem tela tankim slojem zemlje. Izvršavajući obavezu prema bogovima kojima pripada duša poginulog, ona krši Kreontovu zapovest.
