Varian gets harmed badly before Rapunzel, Eugene and Cassandra arrived in Old Corona to help him get the graphtic but discovered Varian very badly abused and serious injured because of the iron masked men. When Rapunzel looked to see what happened to Varian's arm she can believe that her father would allow this to happen while Varian was under house arrest.

Varian gets very badly injured during Rapunzel's nightmare at the beginning of Quest for Varian that when Varian wakes up actually injured badly from the nightmare he was in with Rapunzel. Varian has lacerations, deep cuts, burns, and gashes on parts of his body, arms, legs and face.
