After a two year relocation to New York City, the DeGrate family decide to head back to Charlotte, North Carolina, allowing their sons (Donald Jr. and Dalvin) to reconnect with their longtime friends and former next-door-neighbors, Cedric and Joel. Although the sudden move saddens Dalvin, when he realizes he'll be leaving behind all of his friends as well as his girlfriend - Tionne - his brother couldn't be happier about them returning home. Without knowing, his parents were saving him from the monstrosity of a relationship that he had created with an older girl, Janae, at his Brooklyn-located high school. The move back came with no issues. The family settled right back into their old house and finished out their summer with ease... at least Mary and Donald Sr. did. For their boys, getting reacquainted with old friends and navigating their old home started off as a struggle - especially for Donald Jr. With him and his childhood friend, Joel, at unknown odds with one another, he struggled to socialize and spent the rest of his summer alone. By the start of the new school year, Donald and Cedric's final year of high school, the DeGrate boy had completely adapted his imaginary persona into a reality. A mix of what he had pictured for his future self as a young boy growing up in the South and who he had become during his time in The Big Apple. He created a new name for himself: DeVante. An Octoling awakens deep underground, lost and suffering amnesia. Upon meeting a strange being called Cap'n Cuttlefish, they join forces and embark on a journey to return home, wherever that is. Soon, they encounter an odd telephone who calls the Octoling Test Subject #10,008 and sends him on a journey to the "Promised Land," a utopian world of light that only those who prove themselves worthy may enter. With the captain's support, 10,008, now called Agent 8, begins a quest to prove himself by completing a series of tests within the Deepsea Metro, a facility managed by Kamabo Co., and collecting the four Thangs to build a portal to the Promised Land -- home. Each test requires him to perform a certain skill, and as a reward, he receives memories of his past, piece by piece. Perhaps Agent 8 can prove his worth and make it home. Maybe he can even find himself along the way.
