Padmé's expression turned thoughtful, her eyes searching Anakin's face for answers she wasn't sure she wanted to hear. After a long pause, she spoke again, her voice soft and uncertain, carrying more weight than either of them wanted to acknowledge. "Where does this leave us, Anakin?" Anakin felt a pang in his chest, his heart heavy with the inevitable conversation he's been avoiding for a while. He smiled, but it was a sad, resigned smile. One that held more understanding than words could convey. "Padmé," he began quietly, "you've always been my angel. I've admired you since the day we met, and I always will. But..." He hesitated, glancing away for a second before meeting her gaze again. "I can't feel that kind of attraction. Not for anyone." Padmé held his gaze, her brown eyes soft but full of questions. She didn't pull away from him, didn't flinch, but Anakin could feel her emotions swirling through the Force-disappointment, sadness, a tinge of heartbreak. She hid it well behind her ever-graceful smile, but the Force didn't lie. He could sense the ache beneath the surface, the sadness behind her brave face.

In one universe, Anakin and Padme choose to wait until after the war to marry. But the Sith's plans are already in motion, so that alone will not be enough to save the galaxy, even though Anakin does not join Sidious. Instead, Anakin goes into hiding, vowing to do whatever it takes to bring Sidious down, even if it means fighting a war on his own as the vigilante called Vader.

Being kidnapped by the Sith apprentice who killed Qui-Gon is the last thing Anakin expected to happen while on his first mission with his new Jedi master, Maul. Obi-Wan is... scary. And dark, which duh, he's a Sith. But Anakin is determined to escape him and find his way back to the Jedi, no matter the cost. It's never quite that easy.

Vader time travels to Anakin's body on the Invisible Hand, while Anakin time travels to Vader's body after the assault on Hoth, in his search for Luke. Both of them only have a week in the future and past respectively, a week for them to see what could have been and what they can do to change it before they're out of time.

His life is rather pathetic actually, how far he'll go for anyone that shows him a little bit of kindness and affection. What would he ruin, kill, massacre, or destroy without batting an eye just to possibly see his wife back? To see his children? I don't think anyone wants to know how far he'd go. [---] Padmè resides on Tatooine, swallowed with grief for her husband. But her children are a shining light in her life. She raises them alone in the middle of the sand dunes, only going out to run errands and to see friends. What if the weapon of the Empire that took everything from her appears, and it goes to Tatooine? What if she knew the weapon? What if her past was filled with memories of the monster, mainly happy ones? Or; Darth Vader is sad and finds Padmè on Tatooine one day.
