My steel-toed boots thumped against the side of the small cabin, dislodging thick chunks of snow and ice that had dug their way into the spiked soles. I pulled the hood of my cloak farther over my face, as if it would do anything to cover the shine of my hair, a tell-tale sign of who and what I was.
Not that it mattered.
I grasped the wrought iron handle just as a low slumbering growl echoed through my thoughts, and my lips turned up in response.
The air was stuffy and stagnant in this run down tiny little inn, but the food smelled good, and they had ale. No one moved or so much as breathed as I stepped in, my boots echoing in my wake.
My ears twitched, catching their low murmurs and my eyes snagged their fearful gazes.
Did they know why I was here?
Did they know I wasn't their savior?
My lips curled, revealing sharp canines as I bared my teeth at the nosey onlookers, the fire slumbering inside me started to burn as one by one they found interest in their glasses.
"What can I get you?" The barkeep murmured, a tremor to his tone. His hands shook as he cleaned an empty glass and tried very hard to avoid eye contact with me.
Again that growl came, and when I finally met his eyes, I knew he saw my dragon looking back at him. He cleared his throat, sweat dripping down his forehead.
"Stew is fine, and ale. I'll be needing a bed and bath too." I tossed the money on the counter, sliding into a seat and tugging my hood down, and around me, a collective inhale filled the room as I confirmed their suspicions.
I am the lost princess of the kingdom of Tanelor, and I am here to claim all that was stolen from me.
I am here to take back my kingdom.
And on my dragon's back, we will conquer the world.
