Non le dovevano dare quella stanza! é stata vietata per dei problemi..." "Che tipo di problemi?" chiese spaventata Claire. "Non lo sa?" "No!" "C'è stato un suicidio in quella stanza!" "C...Cosa?" iniziò a balbettare Claire. "Purtroppo è così...cinquant'anni fa ci alloggiava una ragazza di nome Abbie Davis che si suicidò per problemi personali...da quel giorno tutte le persone che ci alloggiavano succedevano cose molto brutte...Alcune persone sono morte, altre diventate pazze, quindi decisero di chiuderla per evitare altri problemi...Non posso credere che le abbiano dato proprio quella stanza."

La stanza - il mondo ristretto che conteneva - era caratterizzata dal buio assoluto. Ogni cosa poteva essere percepita esclusivamente da sensazioni tattili. E' strano come, in chi è naturalmente portato all'uso della vista, l'assenza di immagini si accompagni all'assenza di suoni. I suoni - oppure i rumori - arrivano dopo, quando la mente si è adattata alla totale oscurità. Era immobile, limitato alle sensazioni che poteva dargli il suo corpo, l'universo ristretto ad uno spazio esiguo, quasi inesistente. [...]

Il mondo in cui è ambientata la storia è quello attuale. Ma vi sono piccoli particolari inquietanti che fanno la differenza. I reati, i problemi di tutti i giorni, sono ormai dettagli, non ci sono più leggi che governano e non frega a nessuno né di essere governato né che le leggi vengano rispettate. Esiste invece una specie di ordine superiore, emozionale, che focalizza l'attenzione della popolazione sulle sensazioni e sull'esasperazione dei valori umani.
