A girl, Jessie, is an assistant for people who do not care for her. Jessie enjoys reading "Unseen callousness" by Stephen Heinberg to forget the reality and desperation she feels daily. The novel is about a handsomely cruel Duke, Elden, who rules over the Northern part of the continent. He is the Duke of the north, someone born with great skill and high intellect but Elden is also known for being malignant. Elden and his wife Rue meet their end the night before Elden's announcement of starting a war with the eastern Duke Pallad. The novel ends abruptly and the author Stephen Heinberg never continues the plot. It is a novel Jessie finds herself in the day she dies at the hands of a drunk driver. She awakes in a young beautiful body, in confusion. She has become Rue and must find a way to survive the cruel ending she is to succumb.
