Les chats de laboratoire, après un voyage tragique de l'Islande vers la Colombie-britannique se retrouvent dans une situation de plus en plus désastreuse. Le voyage, marqué par la négligence et la maladie, laisse de nombreuses victimes derrière. À leur arrivée, ils sont enfermés dans des cages et utilisés par les bipèdes comme bon leur semble ceux-ci. Peu après, le laboratoire ferme pour faillite et manque de staff, laissant les chats sans protection ni ressources. Un centre touristique dédié à la faune locale leur offre refuge à l'extérieur du parc nationale, mais une nouvelle tragédie frappe: un volcan entre en éruption, détruisant le centre et précipitant sa faillite. Dans ce contexte de survie extrême, deux visions opposées émergent au sein des chats. Certains choisissent de rester dans la Forêt Calcinée, qu'ils considèrent comme un symbole de mémoire et de résistance. Ils veulent préserver leur passé et reconstruire à partir des cendres. D'autres, désespérés par la situation, cherchent à fuir vers des terres plus fertiles, espérant un avenir meilleur.
