The Metkayina do not rush the current. They adorn, they wait, they let the sea speak first. But Neteyam has always been a son of a different world, and he is tired of waiting. While the reef offers him shells and songs, while his suitor circles at a respectful distance, Neteyam knows what he wants. He has known since Aonung's gaze first found him across the water, since gifts began arriving wrapped in other hands, since the gifts had settled against his skin like a vow half-spoken.. like he beared his acceptance and the cheifs sons choice. Fire and Water do not mix easily. Neteyam, the dutiful eldest son of Toruk Makto, carries the weight of his family's safety on his shoulders. He cannot afford to fail at learning the ways of the reef. Aonung, the prideful prince of the Metkayina, resents the intrusion of the forest people and the task of teaching them. He finds Neteyam's stiff discipline arrogant and annoying. But disdain turns to curiosity when Aonung witnesses Neteyam's secret, exhausting late-night struggles in the water. Drawn together by the shared pressure of expectation, an unspoken truce forms in the darkness of the reef.

"This is a serious conversation." Neteyam stated, his intense big eyes still looking straight at Ao'nung's soul. "You look at me." He said and it wasn't a request. The metkayina gulped, his heart threatening to beat right out of his chest as he felt Neteyam's thumb rubbing the edge of his jaw. "Go on, what do you want to say?" "What I am saying is.." Ao'nung hesitated again. He felt as if Neteyam already knew what he was about to say and he felt naked under those eyes. As if Neteyam could see all his secrets without Ao'nung having to say a word. "What if I don't want you to choose someone else?" He asked and waited for Neteyam to get angry but the boy's expression remained serious. "And who would I choose then?" Neteyam asked, his voice still as soft as ever, as if afraid to spook Ao'nung. The metkayina swallowed with difficulty as his throat constricted with the heaviness of his emotions and nervousness. He had to be courageous, he had to be brave. So Ao'nung thought 'fuck it' and said exactly what he meant. "Me."
