У ній підступність демагога Івана Брюховецького бере гору. У розв'язці Шрам рятує рідну Паволоч від Павла Тетері ціною власної голови. Та все ж фінал роману звучить оптимістично, адже на фоні історичного зламу росте нова сім'я — Петра і Лесі, що уособлює нове покоління.
