So this story takes place in season 1 of Dickinson, during episode 6. Emily fakes being ill, but after a midnight swim in the lake with Ben, it becomes the truth. Also instead of Emily writing to Sue, Austin does out of worry because he, like the rest of the Dickinsons, believe that Emily is on her deathbed. Before it was all an act, something within Emily's control, and now she's really sick and no one knows if she'll recovery or not.
