Jak se jejich počet snižuje, objevují se lidé, kteří veřejně proti tradici Zápisu vystupují. Na zámku jsou stanovena bezpečností opatření a každé z vybraných dívek je přidělena stráž. Z nějakého důvodu se zájem o bezpečí dívek týká především jedné z nich. Té, která o to absolutně nestojí. V ohrožení jsou především životy vybraných, které jsou nuceny zámek opustit. Za hradbami je ochrání stráž. Kdo se o ně ovšem postará, když se vrátí domů? Útoky narůstají, strach se šíří a s ním se zvětšují obavy obou princů. Oba zodpovídají za životy dívek, jež jsou na zámku čestnými hosty. Jeden život je princům ovšem dražší, než ty ostatní. Minimálně jednomu z nich. A tak se z hosta stává vězeň. Vězeň, který dělá vše proto, aby se ze spárů svého věznitele dostal. Ptáček je lapen v kleci, z níž není úniku. Co na tom, že je ta klec zlatá. Stále je to jen klec.

Království rozděleno na devět oblastí. Každá je jiná, stejně jako obyvatelé. Něčím výjimečná. Mír mezi nimi udržuje královský pár, jež má čtyři potomky. Podle tradice nejstarší syn usedne po smrti svých rodičů na trůn, zatímco všichni mladší synové si musí zvolit za ženu jednu z obyčejných dívek. V roce dvacátých narozenin druhorozeného královského potomka je vyhlášen Zápis, jehož se musí zúčastnit všechny mladé svobodné dívky, jež mají věk na vdávání. Mezi nimi je i Kristin Pennerová, pro níž je podle řečí lidí možnost být vybraná zapovězená. Dívka totiž nepochází z vyhrazené rodiny, což znamená, že její předkové nebyli čistě ze sedmé Oblasti. Tmavovláska se už na první pohled liší. Zvláště díky svým výrazným oříškovým očím, jež sdílí tři její sourozenci ze šesti. Oči nejsou to jediné, čím se vymyká. Všechny tyto věci ji činí výjimečnou, unikátní ale především jinou. Není dokonalým zástupcem sedmé Oblasti. Alespoň podle některých. V dalekém a pro mnohé nepřístupném zámku, se však najde někdo, kdo v ní uvidí mnohem víc. Někdo, kdo se jí rozhodne dát šanci utkat se o prince s dalšími dvaceti šesti dívkami. Dostane šanci, o kterou nestojí. Odmítnout však není možné a tak se jedna z nejméně pravděpodobných možností ocitá na královském dvoře. Na místě, jež jí nabízí mnohem víc, než si dokázala představit.

Kdysi dávno, již tomu ani sám nepamatuje, ho jeho otec potrestal za jeho zhýralý život. Seslal ho na zem, v podobě obyčejného člověka. Zbavil ho jeho emocí. Všeho, co cítí. A on,Lucifer, již mnohá staletí, ba tisíciletí čeká, až se objeví ta jediná, která v něm dokáže znovu vidět a probudit to, co tehdy ztratil.
