In the original movie and musical, Crutchie is taken to the refuge and isn't seen much until the end. Yes, this is another one of those stories. He's taken to the refuge, meets a girl, blah blah blah most predictable plot ever. I'll try to make it interesting.

When Davey's father recovers from his injury and is able to go back to work, Davey and Les no longer have to stay newsies. Les, of course, begs Davey to let him stay, to which Davey reluctantly gives in, but only until the start of next school year.
