Though, when the Mer King Christian finally got fed up with the treacherous ways of pirates, he put a curse on them. When the ocean water touches the skin of a pirate, it will burn through the flesh. The only way for this curse to be broken is if the pirates can prove they have love in their hearts for someone other than themselves. What better way to prove that than to fall for someone of the merfolk? Either way, this keeps LeAnne away from the ocean which kills her spirit, so any chance of love from her is slim to none.

Emma Newfound had always grown up near the ocean. She loved the crystal clear water of Florida's coast. Emma's life had not been the best. She was always bullied in school, her mom was still recovering from a heartbreaking divorce, and she was self conscious beyond belief. The ocean has always been, and will always be, her escape.
