An apostate sage who spent a decade selling his skills to the highest bidder finds himself pulled into the mystery surrounding the destruction of his former order. A young acolyte, troubled by strange nightmares and sinister voices, may hold the key, somewhere in her mysterious past, to understanding the beasts pouring out of magical gateways in the guarded heart of Metropolis. Together, these two reluctant heroes begin to realize that they and a small number of friends and allies are all that stand between a growing wave of destruction and a world still struggling to recover from a poorly understood thousand year old calamity.
