Neuvillette, Chief Justice of Fontaine, had recognized Wriothesley and realized his crimes, sentencing him to 10 years in prison. Wriothesley, disgusted by the situation, searches for a plan to regain his position as the Lord of the Fortress of Meropide. An assassination attempt forces Neuvillette and Wriothesley to work together. But the case ends up getting a lot more complicated than they had thought it would. And so does their feelings towards each other.
