De roos die ze hem had gegeven was in werkelijkheid een betoverde roos die zou blijven bloeien tot hij 18 werd. Als hij iemand anders kon liefhebben en ook zijn liefde kon winnen tegen de tijd dat het laatste bloemblaadje eraf viel dan pas zou de vloek worden opgeheven. Als dat niet gebeurde zou hij gedoemd zijn voor altijd een eeuwig een monsterachtig beest te blijven. Jaar voor jaar ging voorbij, en hij verloor alle hoop.
