Doomed to be a casualty in the quest for a male heir, Queen Aemma is instead given a terrifying second chance. A prophetic dream shows her not only her own brutal death but the devastating future it will cause: the betrayal of her daughter Rhaenyra, a bloody civil war that will tear the realm apart, and the eventual ruin of their house. Awakened and refusing to be a sacrificial pawn, Aemma embraces the Targaryen fire she had long suppressed. She forges a secret alliance with the one man she can trust to be her shield, Prince Daemon, and begins to mentor Rhaenyra, not as a princess, but as a future queen. No longer a gentle Arryn, Aemma enters the game of thrones, ready to burn all her enemies to the ground to protect her daughter and break the cycle of destruction she was warned against. "I am not the villain in your story. I am the mother in mine." . . . . . "What you see as my descent into darkness is simply a mother learning to walk through fire." This is an AU of house of the dragons, with the fourteen flames, angry that the last existing family of dragons had fallen into nothing, especially with the murder of their chosen queen. So to correct the mistake, they return time, to make sure a dragon queen sat the throne, for their chosen one to be saved. They send a warning for the one who can make a difference. And who will be better than a mother...

I caressed my belly tenderly as the screams of my stepmother echoed through the halls of the Red Keep. My mother's ladies fluttered around me in concern. They worried for me. Why would they not? After all, my muña had suffered greatly under the weight of pregnancy and had died in childbirth. No. Not died. Murdered. My father had allowed those grey rats to cut her open for a boy who died overnight. Rage fills me every time I remember that my muña died butchered like an animal. I will never forgive him. Nor will I ever forgive Alicent. That whore slipped under my father's sheets while my muña's ashes were still warm. She goes around acting all pious and haughty, even going as far as to scold me for my unladylike behavior. But whoring herself to the King is acceptable? Alicent is but the daughter of a second son, from a minor house at that. She was my maid, the one who dressed me and cleaned my privy. There is no way in the Fourteen Hells that I will bow to her. Much less call her queen.

What if Rhaenyra Targaryen dreamed of a future that had yet to happen? She does not see everything, only enough to know that betrayal waits within the Red Keep, that her isolation is no accident, and that fire awaits her blood if she remains still. Armed with fractured visions and hard-earned clarity, Rhaenyra begins to move quietly. This is not the story of a war. It is the story of how one is prevented or born early in blood.
