Hudson Ellis is good at his job. Somehow, he manages not to annoy people when he knocks at their doors and asks them to contribute to the charity he works for - instead, he gets them to sign up for sponsoring programmes and fish whatever spare change they have out of their pockets. Even the infamously tough residents of New York City are falling victim to Hudson's easy-going ways and wide smile; that is, until one woman renders him speechless with sarcastic refusals and slams her door in his face. Perhaps Hudson would be able to forget her - if it wasn't for the fact that she lives on the same floor of the next apartment over, and they both have floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for a rather generous view into each other's flats.

“925 miles is a long way to go for one girl,” Mary says, chewing on her bottom lip. “Well, you’re a spectacular girl.” And Mary only frowns and tries to blink away the gathering tears. “Perhaps I’m not as spectacular as you think.”

I do not know what love is. I am small and the universe is enormous and I am rather ignorant. But you make me feel alive, and I guess that will have to be enough.

Adeline Welsh had always been pretty confident that she was cursed. Ever since her fourteenth birthday, she'd had a totally unrealistic, totally uncoordinated, and totally uncalled for string of bad luck. To make matters worse, on the day she truly believed something was going to go right for once, she ended up being rejected by her longtime crush while simultaneously being witness to the death of a boy she never even really knew. And perhaps she would have been able to move on and forget about it, just like everything else. Only if it weren't for the unintentionally clingy ghost now tethered to her, causing her to rethink everything she thought she knew about the people around her, and more importantly, herself. The world as we know it ended 209 years ago. From a desert wasteland springs a single kingdom, ruled by a tyrannical King and trapped in an endless war against the shadowy desert warriors. As a desperate bid to save what remains of humanity, society has been split into two distinct classes, nicknamed the Court and the Commons. For an oppressed population on the brink of revolution, a common thief could be the last hope. Up until now, Kay has survived by her wits alone. Reckless and impulsive, wanted by the King's guard, Kay has become known as the Runner. Using the city's rooftops as her personal domain, she manages to keep one step ahead of the King with one hand buried in the purses of the courtiers. Driven by the plight of the commoners and the unjust death of her family, Kay seizes the chance to graduate from small-time thievery to full-scale rebellion. Her opportunity comes in the form of Will, a wealthy ex-soldier with a dark past. Plucked from the streets and thrown into the shimmering palace court, Kay must use her every strength to blend into a world where she doesn't belong, closer to the enemy than she ever thought she would be.
