The narrative includes a time-lapse that takes you through the years, giving you a glimpse into how James' life unfolds as he grows up. The narrative jumps back and forth between James and Leandra Defiant, a scholarship student from New York State at his private school studying abroad. Leandra despises James from the moment she glances at him. He seems as if he has it all, parental wealth, charm, and exceptional articulation, (however, it seems as though she is more upset about the lavish lifestyle. Coldness thaws after Leandra enters accelerated English with James and they soon turn from friends to close "friends". ("friends")
