A 12-year-old thief. A fireproof shopkeeper. A card magician. A mysterious old man. Eighteen years before our story begins, a scroll was created by none other than Grand Mage Athael. He called it the Ng Ey, and it was famously blank. Indecipherable. That is, until young master-of-disguise Kellyn happened upon it and saw something. - - - - - - - - As he turned the multicolored case in his hands, he spotted the label, which simply read, 'for young eyes only'. His brow furrowed. He opened the case and spread the paper on the pedestal, and his eyes narrowed further. The text, while still written in gold and composed of incomprehensible words, was arranged into paragraphs. It began with a small header followed by a comma, and there was a name signed at the bottom that he couldn't quite make out. Kellyn shifted his hand and noticed a second sheet of paper behind the first. This one used varying shades of gold ink, from lighter yellow to almost brown. Given the boxy, graphical nature of this sheet's contents, it seemed to be a map, but its markings were still in the mage language. "Theaza!" a muffled voice snapped, seemingly from below. Kellyn jumped. "Don't touch that!" He peered around the pedestal and noticed a loose scroll wedged into the floorboards, but nothing more. Time was of the essence. He stuffed the scroll back into its case, satcheled it, and hurried out of the room. Velda is found by the royal family on her planet and joins seven other teens with similar beginnings. But, as they begin their training on the path to mastery of magic, something goes wrong... - - - - - - - - Velda reached into her pocket and pulled out the emerald and ring. It was a lot to take in, and Cha knew that she knew it. She looked back at Cha. "What if I can't do it?" "The fates decided that you would be here when I came to the material realm. You are the one we chose, and you are meant to have this Powerstone." Velda looked down at the emerald, which was still glowing faintly. "Could it hurt me?" "This is a first for me as well. I am not certain. I apologize if the transformation is harsh, but I think you will make it through fine." "What transformation?" "Well, it is hard to say what it will be." Velda stared at the stone, and after a while could see her reflection in it, stained green by the shine it was surrounded in. How could she trust herself to take on a task like this? "Tatia-" She narrowed her eyes at Squall and rammed her head into his to make sure the message was clear, and he lowered the sword slightly, wincing in pain. That nickname was reserved for family, and close friends if she ever had any. Her eyes teared up as she remembered her mother and sister, who she would probably never see again. "I see I hit a sensitive spot," he said, laughing quietly, almost robotically, and she cringed. "Anyway, Tatiana," he corrected, bringing his sword back to her upper chest, "do you have any idea how incredible you are? I've spent a long time looking for someone like you." Squall smiled to himself. "I suppose even now you're searching the future and working out what my next move might be. It all depends on a simple question, really. The doors to the building were big enough for even the largest dragon to enter, but still only a small imperfection in the huge structure. I knew the door was the size of a dragon because I could see one to compare it to, flying above the dome. Then I realized that the dragon was black. "Dad? Look up there." He looked up and cocked his head in confusion. "I've never seen anything like that before." The beast was quite high in the sky and didn't look particularly threatening, but it still spooked me to see an arkaetre that wasn't white. After watching the shadowy dragon for a few more moments, my dad said slowly, "It seems like they have no rider. We should probably tell the Council about this." I nodded and followed him inside the dome. "But what about the opening ceremony?" I asked nervously, looking down at my watch.
