It pissed Heeseung off.
Because for years, he'd been cold. For years, he'd kept people at a distance, shut them out, made sure they knew not to get too close. And Jake, nice, clueless, good Jake was standing here, looking at the snow like it was magic, like he was five years old and seeing it for the first time, and Heeseung felt like the biggest asshole alive. He'd been harsh with people since the day his parents died. Not for any real reason, just because it was easier. Easier to keep people at arm's length.
Now he thought it would be easier to scoff at Jake's endless energy, easier to pretend that someone like Jake, who was warmth and light and every dumb thing Heeseung pretended not to need, wouldn't make a difference in his life.
But standing here now, watching Jake smile like the world was still good, Heeseung felt something ugly twist in his chest.
