The scent of impending rain hung heavy in the atmosphere, adding to the urgency that pulsed through my veins. I pushed my exhausted body forward, leaping over fallen branches and dodging the gnarled roots that threatened to trip me. A quick glance over my shoulder confirmed my worst fear. The lifeless predators, their eyes vacant and hunger evident, were closing in, their relentless pursuit unyielding.
