Welcome to Laminax laboratories. ...Er...the two isolated sectors of it, at least. See, the place had actually been set up rather recently, in order to study these crazy blue crystals the company found whilst digging for who-knows-what. But, those crystals happened to pack this kind of funky radiation that completely overhauled both the physiological & morphological aspects of a human being...and did some pretty weird stuff to any objects that they came into contact with as well. But it gets weirder; the ex-humans that were changed by the crystals? They themselves emitted a much, MUCH less intense variety of the crystal's radiation, though they were still just as capable of converting other humans as the crystals were. Those things, dubbed "Raytrax" by Laminax, quickly overran parts of the facility as the company evacuated whoever was left, and sealed off the rest of the labs from the newfound threat. While Laminax did eventually get around to studying the Raytraxians themselves, the only thing they were really able to get out of that effort was that the creatures could only really convert another human through direct contact with an open wound. Anyways, fast-forward a couple weeks, skip through a long, boring discussion on what to do with the sections of the lab now, and we'll find that Laminax has sent a rather large group of humans down into that part of the facility, though it wasn't to clear out the Raytrax. These were just ordinary people, who had signed up to be part of a social experiment. They were down there purely so Laminax could see what would happen. Skip ahead a few more months, and Laminax is looking to send down the first ever "temp squad;" a new, temporary group of humans, that will be extracted after their stay is up. It's in this here group, that you'll find our main character, drawn to the offer by the hefty cash compensation. (This fic will feature some removed Rays as endangered species, look to the wiki if you're confused on anything)
