Tessa Hayes has learned not to get comfortable.
Not in houses. Not in towns. And definitely not with people.
After years of being dragged from place to place by her unreliable father, Raymond, seventeen-year-old Tessa finds herself starting over once again-this time in the painfully ordinary town of Hawkins, Indiana. Her mother walked out when she was young, her father spends more time drinking than acting like a parent, and every promise Tessa has ever been given has eventually been broken.
So she stopped believing in them.
Hawkins is supposed to be temporary. Another school. Another bedroom she won't bother decorating. Another town she'll eventually leave behind.
Then she meets Steve Harrington.
Arrogant, irritating, ridiculously confident Steve Harrington, who somehow manages to get under her skin from the moment they meet. Tessa thinks she has him figured out almost immediately-the rich boy with perfect hair, a nice car and absolutely no idea what the real world looks like.
Except Steve isn't quite who she thinks he is.
And when strange things begin happening around Hawkins, Tessa is pulled into a world of missing children, government secrets, creatures that shouldn't exist and a group of kids who seem far too comfortable putting themselves in mortal danger.
Suddenly, Steve Harrington is no longer just the boy who annoys her in the school hallway.
He's the boy standing beside her when everything goes wrong.
The boy who keeps showing up.
The boy who never asks her to make promises she can't keep.
And for the first time in Tessa's life, Hawkins begins to feel dangerously close to somewhere she could call home.
But Tessa knows better than anyone that people leave.
Things fall apart.
And promises are only made to be broken.
So falling in love with Steve Harrington might just be the most terrifying thing Hawkins throws at her.
